The Symbolism & Psychology of Libra

Libra is symbolised by a set of scales, an ancient image of judgement, balance and discernment. To weigh something is to assess its value: to place one thing against another and determine what is beautiful, what is fair, what is appropriate, or what is right.

We find this process everywhere. It is present in the arts, where we judge beauty, style, proportion and harmony. It is present in law and social order, where we attempt to establish what is just and fair. It is present in relationships, where we continually negotiate between our own needs and those of another. And it is present whenever we deliberate, weigh alternatives and make a decision.

This process of weighing and assessing lies at the heart of Libra. Libra seeks the right balance. It strives for harmony, proportion and justice, making it one of the most civilised and idealistic signs of the zodiac. In this respect, it stands opposite Aries: where Aries is instinctive, immediate and individualistic, Libra pauses to consider the other side.

Libra is often described as indecisive, but this misses something important. Libra can be extremely decisive—but ideally only after due consideration. The scales must first come into balance.

This is beautifully expressed in the traditional image of Lady Justice. In one hand she holds the scales, with which she weighs the evidence; in the other, the sword, with which she delivers her judgement. She is blindfolded, symbolising impartiality: justice should not be swayed by appearance, status or personal preference. First comes deliberation; then comes decision.

In this session, we will explore the symbolism and psychology of Libra through its central themes of balance, beauty, relationship, judgement and justice—and consider what happens when the desire for harmony itself falls out of balance.
